KRIŽNA JAMA - CAVE

THE KRIŽNA JAMA (CAVE) 
Križna cave is worldwide known karst cave. Its specialities are
underground lakes with sinter's barriers extremely interesting site of cave
bears' bones and naturally preserved environment for animals. 

The length of all passages is over 8 km (6 miles). Air temperature inside the cave is constant through the whole year +8°C. The cave drains away water from the Southern side of Bloke plateau towards Eastern margin of Cerknica field. Križna jama is fourth in the world in number of actual cave animals (44 different species). During winter there are about 400 hibernating bats of 7 different species in the cave. The most frequent are lesser horseshoe bats (Rhinolophus hipposideros). Visitors can see some of interesting sites in the cave in one hour. 

To experience secrets of intact underground you should make reservation of the long visit ( 4 hours).

The entrance part of the cave is known by its huge halls. The other
passages are cut of by calcareous sinter or covered with rocks, and smaller stalagmites and stalactites. The natural light is gone after a few hundred meters and visitors continue to explore the cave with hand lamps. The Main passage constantly continues through the Great hall towards sinter's Čimboraso where extremely interesting displayed bones of cave bears canbe seen. The bones surprised visitors with its size and mass. The path continues through the passage which drains off water from the first lake. The visit is followed by 10 minutes boat ride on the first lake. After the boat ride we return back to the entrance.

One-hour visit of the dry part is suitable also for groups of up to 50 people. 

Don't forget to bring warm clothes:  trousers, a pullover, a long-sleeved shirt

and worm socks.

From first lake on we continue over the rocks to the second lake. In the middle of the lake the ceiling lowers and makes the passage to the water part difficult. This is the start of the unforgettable part of the visit. Water streams over calcareous sinter barrages from one lake to another. Barriers are built by calcareous sinter, which eliminates from two streams flowing from Bloke plateau. Barriers and water level still rise. Water covers stalagmites and its structures, which gives the impression that they grow out of water (Port of Venice, Pirate's ship, Church organ, Lynx). The lakes are up to 6m deep. At the beginning of the wet passage lakes are short, and longer in the last part. The tour ends at Calvary (Kalvarija). In this hall rich with stalagmites and stalactites the cave divides into Northern part – Mud (Blata) and North-eastern part – Coloured passage (Pisani rov).
